F# - D - G - E

Criticisms:

- That chord progression. It's classic, but it's not...really original. It's used really well in this song later on, but in the intro, it was really in my face that this chord progression was being used. And honestly, I almost turned off on the song right there.

-Your drums might have come in earlier...or at least your kicks could have been slightly less subdued. And 2:25 really jolted me out of how I thought the song was moving...I just don't know how good it is to spring that in just to make a drum fill. And that's what it feels like, a drum fill.

Uncriticisms:

-Your usage and manipulation of the chord progression was magnificent. Several times I had to remind myself that that progression was there.

-Your use of FX, especially water in the beginning and end, was especially good as a lead-in and -out. Although I do want to go to the bathroom now XD

Seems like it would be better suited to be a loop.

I'm not sure if you clicked the wrong button or whatnot when submitting, but this song really does seem like it should be classed as a loop.

In any case though it does have a strong dance feel to it, something you don't often get with a lot of music submitted in this genre here. Not that I'm really qualified to say. But all in all, it would make a good background to a game or whatnot in my opinion.

T3animator responds:

ok.. i'll try to make a loop :]

...*wince*

I don't see it. I just don't see it. I don't see structure, or a melody, or a beat, or rhythm, or...anything. I am getting lost in it, but I don't like to be lost in a piece. I listen to techno because of its layers and layers of simplicity, layered into order, carefully, each layer supporting each other and building up like a tower towards the threshold of what makes music good and what makes it bad. I can't even see how this even makes a heap. Here and there, you have strange remnants of what might have been a coherent song, but they're lying on the ground in all states of ruin. Even as an experimental song, I can't see how this pushes the borders of experiment. I'm sorry, but I just don't see it. And my ears are starting to leak brain fluid. Next time, please work with a basic structure. Or even at least a well-defined beat.

Cuzone responds:

Your review is kind of strange, honestly:
Most people are actually complaining that the song has a repetitive structure, that its easy to catch and repeats too much... So I don't really understand your review.

Anyway, thanks for listening and hope next time you'll like something by us.

Hooked at 0:31

Points of win:

0:31 - I find that when drums come as excellently as this I no longer can resist.
2:31 - I also find that an 808 drum fill after a mellow section has the same effect.
3:31 - ...okay, it's really 3:34 but I couldn't resist. Clearly descending from a climax, while maintaining good energy.

Points of ...:

4:05 - What is that synth? It seems to contradict the piece rather than help it. It's the bit where I would be thrown off balance if I were dancing. It doesn't mesh. I expect that if I listened to it 10+ times it would work better.

All in all, the last bit doesn't detract so hard from that the piece that I would give it anything less than a 10 anyway. Of course I'm biased, but the fact is this is GOOD!

If this is "Ice"...

Then what's "Broken Ice"?

Love the song. I hear it every morning when my phone alarm goes off. ^_^

A few points that might be better:

Although this is the best remix of Still Alive I've seen out there, there are bits that I think could be improved.

1) The voice - what did you use to make this voice? Ellen McLain's original voice acting had a lot of emotion behind it, and pitching it this high kind of makes it sound a bit silly - (see the "ha ha". It doesn't carry the weight it did originally), although I understand this is a piece of music and thus you don't particularly need the seriousness. Still I'd advise using some kind of editor like Melodyne to make it sound a little less ... chipmunky? (is that the right word?)

2) Not sure I liked the pitch change near the end (1:50, "and believe me...") because it contrasted the slightly lower key "still alive" that happened right before.

Other than that, awesome remix. I feel better that I have lived and listened than I would have had I not. Really, all my criticisms are pretty much only because I love Portal waaaaaaaay too much =.='''

If my points were corrected, 10. As it is I'm going to give a 10 anyway because IT'S PORTAL. ^_^

fishfood2021 responds:

Well it didn't make that many changes to the voice. Just a little pitch change so it didn't go out of tune. Thanks for the review though :D

Would be a good beginning for something.

I'm no expert, but in my opinion if this were extended and a good melody put into it it wouldn't be half bad as a song - as it is it's kind of leaving me hanging. It's really not a song yet, simply an intro. An intro to what is completely up to you.

P.S. I'd try making your drums a little less repetitive. Maybe it's just because they're standing out as the only thing there so I'm scrutinizing it a bit too much =.='''

NinjaEskimo responds:

hey thx, see, this probably would be a full had i the full FL studio. so ya. and yeah, my drums are repetitive. i appreciate the review.

Let there be techno...

And there was techno. As awesome as awesome can be. 15 seconds in and I pressed the download button. This...rocks.

Oh dear sweet God.

I cannot stop loving this song. Just like I stuck -Jumper- and -Race around the world- on loop on my iTunes, -Welcome to metropolis- is going in my ultimate favorites playlist. And contrary to to other reviews, I don't find the vocals to be too obstructive. In fact, it even stops the tune from being too repetitive. As always, you are THE UTTER AWESOME when it comes to techno music.

Waterflame responds:

aww, man, thank you :D glad you like it :D

Cannot...stop...dancing!

This is a masterpiece of a work in your genre. This is definitely going in my favorite plays. Your melody is catchy, and everything else in the song supports the "maximum happyness", as you said. I also have this playing on loop right now in my iTunes (BTW, my play count for this song is 440 times).

THIS SONG IS FULL OF THE AWESOME!

Well, I'm here. There's not much else needed to know.
